Heatwaves – How to Maintain Your Air Conditioning

As any NYC citizen could easily tell you, it’s hot. Really hot. In this kind of heat demand for NYC air conditioner services have skyrocketed. NYC air conditioner service companies are overworked and wait time for repair and maintenance services are increasing by the day. You can’t always get the service you need right away. But this can be potentially disastrous. Being without air conditioning in the kind of weather we are having how could potentially put the elderly and children at risk. Let’s look at some good practices you can use to help maintain your air conditioning so that this does not happen to you. Especially in the current NYC heat!

Filters

The most important thing you can do to keep your air conditioning in top shape is to make sure that you regularly replace, or at least clean, your filters. These filters can easily get clogged and obstructed with dirt overtime and this can reduce airflow out of your air conditioning unit as well as impair the heat absorbing qualities of your air coils.

Air coils

The coils of your air conditioner will collect dust over time. This is not good to let go on for too long because the dirt insulated the coils which is the last thing you want as this reduces any ability of the coils to absorb heat. Once or twice a year it is a good idea to examine these coils and run a damp cloth over them. You should also reduce external sources of dirt near your air conditioning unit to help keep the coils clean.

Coil fins

There are aluminum fins on your coils which can get bent quite easily. This can block airflow when it occurs. Get a “fin comb” and regularly use it to get the fins back to their original shape.

Window seals

For room air conditioners such as window units, you want to ensure the seals between the air conditioner and the window are always as tight as possible. Inspect this seal regularly and make sure it is in contact with the metal casing of your unit. If this is not the case, it can end up letting cool air out, thus decreasing your air conditioner’s efficiency and increasing your costs of using the less efficient unit.

Condensate drains

A condensate drain is essential for reducing humidity in a room. If they become clogged then this ability is reduced and this can result in discolored carpets or walls.

Remember, in heat like NYC is facing now, having properly running air conditioning is crucial to your health and well-being. The last thing anyone in NYC wants to have happen is for their air conditioning to break down. Proper maintenance of your air conditioner can go a long way to making sure this doesn’t happen to you. But if it does, and your air conditioner breaks down despite your best efforts, then don’t be hesitant to call your local NYC air conditioner service at once to come take a look at your unit as soon as possible!
